"In the year 1881 a ten kilometer line was built from Tangshan to Xugezhuang. It was planned to have mules pull the wagons. As the load was too heavy for mules, the first chinese built steam locomotive was constructed. The English engineer C. W. Kinder who had organized the trackbuilding managed to improvise by combining the boiler of a steam crane with a frame of old iron and discarded wheelsets. Later it was rebuilt into a working three axle tank locomotive. On 9th June 1881 the locomotive did the first test run."
